I am using openDNS for filtering, but I’d much prefer granular parental control on the device.

I called and checked with Customer Services in the UK before buying 2 of them which is why I feel cheated. They didn’t only mention Freetime but extolled its virtues in great detail!
I then read lots of UK reviews which also mentioned it (was it in the UK Press Release I wonder)? As they were Christmas gifts for 10 year olds I can hardly take them back and return the devices. They are gaming when they are only meant to be reading just as I predicted which us why I contacted Amazon in the first place. I have spoken to them today and there are no imminent plans to release it in the UK. They gave me a £20 voucher as an apology.

Parental controls under Settings do the job but restrictions can only be set
manually (no automatic time limits).
You can edit the name for your kids’ devices on your amazon account
under your kindle account/manage your devices.
I hope FreeTime will be available soon for the rest of us in the UK

Aye, they need to sort out the consumer experience and understand that parents want to safely allow kids to use the devices and download content. I have put a parental password on to prevent my son downloading anything without my permission, but that kind of defeats the learning experience and gradual increase in personal responsibility that should take place.

Heard no more. I am getting a bit annoyed with the Kindle. My son loves it because he doesn’t yet appreciate the limitations, such as not being able to download films to the device. It seems you have to stream them and I couldn’t find Avengers Assemble anywhere on the amazon video store anyway.

They are pushing a monthly subscription to Lovefilm, but I don’t want that. I used to be a member and when I quit they got a debt collection agency (basically bullies) to pursue me for £6 or so that they said I owed them! And this was after years of membership! But that’s another story.

I know Amazon are trying to emulate Apple with the closed environment / ecosystem for content, but they are going to have to put more effort in and the lack of parental controls is still a bugbear.

By the way, you can introduce web controls using OpenDNS.com which I can recommend.
