Johann Lamont’s speech quotes…how daft does she think we are?

BBC Scotland, in their current inimitable style of seemingly highlighting any No campaigners statements or accusations, presented a selection of Johann Lamont’s speech quotes on their website. Here they are below, with my own comments.

“Let us define ourselves by what we are for, not what we are against.”
Yes, let’s do so. The Yes campaign in the Independence ‘debate’ has a positive message of believing in Scotland’s people. Johann and her pals’ No campaign is merely anti-SNP and has no message but one of fear. What she doesn’t yet quite understand is that things have moved on and people can see its not about the SNP, it’s about the future of Scotland. Can she HONESTLY define herself as being for Scotland’s best interests? Or just against the SNP?

“Scotland can stand united against the Tory cuts and I call upon the SNP to work with us.”
The audacity in this statement is worthy of the sainted Margaret herself! The truth is its the Labour Party under her direction that either sides with the Tories or abstains when there is a vote to stand against the Tory cuts!
The reason Labour don’t stand united against Tory cuts, like welfare cuts and Bedroom Tax is only because they’d have to agree with ‘THEM’ (the SNP). This has become the only thing that Labour stands for – it is anti-SNP rather than holding any socialist principles.

“Our greatest resource will always be our people and if we are to give people the chance to fulfil their potential it is a second education boom we need in Scotland.”
So why then Johanna have you said there should be an end to the “something for nothing culture”? Opposed to the free higher education rights introduced by…the SNP!?

“I am well aware that you don’t appease lions by throwing more Christians at them. And I will not walk an inch down the road to independence.”
That’s a shame because more and more of your party and Labour voters are starting to question why this is. Why would Labour stand rock-solid with an unelected, hated government of millionaire out-of-touch Etonians rather than stand up for traditional Labour values? Is she ashamed of our great country and its people? Does she think we are too wee, too poor and too stupid to look after our own interests? She is living in the past.

“Can I tell you today what powers I really want? They are the powers Alex Salmond already has. The power over Scotland’s education. The power over Scotland’s health service.”
And yet, she has denounced the positive reforms offering free services at point of need as “something for nothing culture”!!! Would she then overturn these reforms if she had the power? This is supposed to be a Labour leader! For shame.

“Is Alex Salmond concerned about the families who pay more for childcare than they do a mortgage?”
I have no idea the answer to this, but based on what I see of party policies and what the SNP government in Holyrood has done compared to the careless arrogance of New Labour / LibDem years, I know who I would trust more.

“I challenge Alex Salmond to meet me next week and to bring his budget.”
Yawn. More Salmond-fishing. Empty rhetoric.

“There is no greater cause than child poverty – its existence diminishes us all.”
Then why did your party abstain on the vital Bedroom Tax vote?

“Alex Salmond is no friend of the poor.”
How many times! Does she think slinging enough mud will make it stick? Again, the only form of ‘argument’ is invective against Salmond and the SNP.
You see, these accusations, the negative campaigning, is designed to paint anyone who challenges this rubbish as a Salmond-apologist. Like a dreaded “Nat”. Nevertheless, it’s worth pointing out that the Scottish Government has introduced free higher education which was and still is opposed by her and her Tory-Labour party.

“We in this party, this movement, will fight for this country we love.”
Only insomuch as Ed lets you! If you cared about Scotland Johann, as much as you cared about protecting your own position, you would vote for what’s best for the country.
Yes, you have no argument to put forward, no policies. All you do in effect is shout “It’s no fair, THEY are more left wing than us! And Ed wont let me do anything!”
What is this movement that you speak of? Are you seriously suggesting that you represent the traditional values of the Labour movement? Or is it a market-driven New Labour (i.e. Tory, anti-Labour) movement you’re talking about?
And what is this country you love? The UK?

In summary….
Johann, you are floundering around, trying to come up with some policy of additional powers for Scotland that your Westminster bosses will see as meaningless enough to let you put forward.
That’s why you floated the idea of promising to allow Holyrood to set the important level of…..airport flight taxes! It is so sad it is beyond humorous.

If that is your idea of Scotland, of the limits you would set on this great country, then I hope your party wakes up to you very soon and forces you out of office.

Your speech was beyond parody. E.g. I hear you have also set up an Orwellian sounding “Truth Team”! Need I point out the irony of this? None of your scare stories have yet stood up to scrutiny and you are even defending Ian Taylor’s donation to Better Together! A trifle disingenuous wouldn’t you say? Maybe the “Truth Team” could help you unpick the deceit surrounding this.

We could really do with some honest debate in the Independence Referendum. But to debate you need to have a credible alternative view. You are bereft – and you’re leading a once-great party, that used to stand up for the real people of the country, to the dogs.

Have a long, hard HONEST and TRUTHFUL look at yourself, Johann.
Stop the dishonest carping and try to come up with real policies. You might need to become a little more shall I say, ‘independent’ to do so.

Labour used to stand up against the Tory policies that decimated the country from Westminster. Now only the ‘dreaded’ SNP government does that, while you have aligned your party with those hated policies. Let me say that I consider the current Scottish Labour party’s direction to not only be contrary to the best interests of our country (by that I mean Scotland), but a gross betrayal of traditional Labour values and all those who have voted Labour in the past.

Be brave Johann. Do you have Labour at heart, or only self-interest? If its the former, you may in all honesty decide to choose your friends a little more carefully.

@BetterTogether supporters:- you won’t ever see an outlaw drive a family from their home.

Yes, as through this world I’ve wandered
I’ve seen lots of funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.

And as through your life you travel,
Yes, as through your life you roam,
You won’t never see an outlaw
Drive a family from their home.

These words (you might as well title this couplet ‘The Bedroom Tax’) explain fairly well why the Scottish point of view is different from the Tory view. We have a sense of fairness as opposed to grasping which of course Thatcher translated as aspiration.

The grasping view expressed in Thatcherite policies is about greed, the Ayn Rand philosophy of individuals stepping on others to achieve what they desire with no compunction.

Often the common folk of any country see that there is a much more human feeling that is more important. Everyone wants the best and most for themselves, that’s easy…..To take the difficult path is more honourable – to vote for what is best for the community, the society, is the egalitarian ideal that Scotland has long taken to heart.

Woody Guthrie expressed in this lyric how the outlaw will rob from the rich and give to the poor, the Robin Hood ideal that’s been lost in large tracts of England. Evidence their voting record.

The worst of all robbers however are the premeditated snakes who rob from the poor and give to the rich. That greed is the legacy of Thatchers Britain. The “I’m alright Jack” path of “no such thing as society”. We see this in the unregulated free market where the pursuit of personal gain is seen as good. Any rational individual must see there should be limits to how the gain is achieved.

That schism that has resulted in ever-increasing divisions of rich and poor is a great impetus for Independence. Never again should we be subject to a Westminster government imposing unwanted policies. The people who live in Scotland (of whatever nationality) are best-placed to choose what’s right for Scotland.

Media spin on #indyref fascinatingly disingenuous. Questionable donations to the No campaign shames Scotland’s newspapers.

20130410-172332.jpg
A piece by Rev. Stuart Campbell in the Wings Over Scotland website

…Only in the world of the Scottish mainstream media can the No campaign receiving a huge donation from a man closely linked to Serbian war criminals, Saddam Hussein and massive tax avoidance be translated into “pressure” on the Yes campaign. The Scotsman is abandoning all pretence of impartial and balanced coverage almost as fast as its readers are abandoning it.

We can’t help but ponder whether the two might be connected.

It is amazing how the Yes campaign gets slated and spun against, despite the story actually being how the No (‘better together’) campaign gets its money from donations of unusual, southern provenance.

The Scotsman and the Herald are no longer quality publications and if I were a journalist working there I would feel black shame at my newspaper’s views towards its own country – and the truth.

We made a Theremin

We made a Theremin at the Mini Maker Faire, Edinburgh at Summerhall

My April Fool Joke this morning. Perhaps it was too cruel!

Below is the letter I printed out and put at the front door as if it had been posted through. It fooled the boy and his mum! Maybe I went a bit too far?

:-)

Dear Parent

I am writing to let you know that due to budgetary pressures on East Ayrshire Council and the implementation of the new National Curriculum for Excellence, it has become necessary to restructure certain elements of the 1st year intake from Annanhill Primary School to Grange Academy, Kilmarnock.

Consequently I have to inform you that your child has been selected as one of a small number who are being transferred to other secondary schools, rather than to Grange Academy as planned.

Your child should NOT report to Grange Academy campus after the summer break, but should report to St. Joseph’s Academy, New Farm Loch.

To make this new plan easier, a transition fortnight has been arranged during which your child can acclimatise to the new environment.

This will begin on Monday 1 April at 10:00am and will last until Friday 12 April. I apologise for the late notice of this cancellation of the Easter holiday.

Your child will be able to meet our new Head of 1st Year, Mr Olaf Pridsolay, newly arrived from the Swedish school system. Mr Pridsolay is a well respected disciplinarian. Amongst other accomplishments, he introduced innovatively strict regimes, ranging from ice-baths for arriving late to school in the morning, to a ban on lunchtimes for those who neglect to do their homework.

I am sure you child will benefit from this new arrangement and I am very pleased to be getting rid of the little nuisance from our campus at last.

yours sincerely

The river shows at a strange angle on either side of the bridge, but it’s actually straight below, flowing from right to left.

Double-speak from the Bitter Together campaign

Lies lies and double-speak. We are better independent.

Vote YES in the referendum and we won’t have to listen to the career politicians who care about lining their own pockets and not about our country.

We can have a fair society, with the health service we want, not the Tory (ie English Labour) imposed cuts.

We won’t have to send our young people to fight illegal wars.

We will determine our own way in the world, with our unique voice among nations, instead of being represented by Eton boys.

We will be able to elect the governments we want instead of “appealing to middle England” and ending up ruled by the economic needs of the City of London.

We will be an equal partner in Britain, no longer a northern region of England.

And we will have a media and broadcasting service no longer staffed by fearful hangers-on, who won’t be afraid to speak the Truth instead of spinning every story for their unionist political pals.

The alternative that ‘better together’ would have is be the only country in the world that would be so stupid as to vote against their own right to self-determination. To continue giving away our enviable wealth in oil to an arrogant succession of governments that will squander it on wars and economic disasters.

How would it be to wake up after a no vote and to be the laughing stock of the world? What kind of country would we be to vote no? A non-existent one.

Compare to Norway which has squirrelled away an oil fund of £400 billion. Yet Scotland (a richer country, less oil-dependant) faces a years of austerity and deficit within the UK. While the rich who stole our wealth instead of being jailed, get richer and get more bonuses!

Don’t be fooled any longer. The oil will be there for at least another two generations, that’s why there is increasing private investment.

The UK isn’t fair and isn’t working.

We can bring change to our country. YES we can.

One Day Digital – for young people 13+ to code, build, experiment, create!

panel_wide_Digital-Education-Wordle-FeatureFrom NESTA Scotland
I wanted to make sure you and your colleagues/ friends/ children know about our One Day Digital events for young people which we are running as part of our campaign to get more young people in Scotland creating digital content, rather than just consuming it. We have 4 fantastic days lined up for teenagers and we want to make sure they know about it. We have had tremendous support for this across Scotland.

Our digital events across Scotland are for young people (13+). We only have 2 weeks to the first event and need to push this out to young people, so your networks would be very helpful. Our twitter is @Onedaydigital and facebook /OneDayDigital. Young people have to sign up on the eventbrite site: http://onedaydigital.eventbrite.com to guarantee their place. We have contacted all schools in the area.

Places are free on a first come first served basis and we give them everything they need- lunch, expert support from industry, laptops and software ( thanks very much indeed to O2)- all they have to do is sign-up here and choose the city they want to take part in.

Our partners include Mozilla, Young Rewired State, Coder Dojo, STV, Mak Lab, BBC, Quartic Llama and Dundee University and we have really cool equipment for them to use including raspberry pi, arduino boards as well as 3d printers.

Our dates:

Saturday 2nd March- DUNDEE
Saturday 16th March- ABERDEEN
Saturday 23rd March- GLASGOW
Saturday 30th March- EDINBURGH (part of Edinburgh Science Festival)

What can you do at One Day Digital? Its stuff you normally don’t get at school:

• 3D Printing: Hosted by MakLab, Scotland’s first open access digital fabrication studio. In this session you can create and print a 3D model. You willuse 3D software to design and then with the help of the experts from MakLab print the physical object on a 3D printer. You can even take the model you created home with you!
• Raspberry Pi: Design and code behaviours for your own video game character and put it to the test all on a Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. This stream will introduce the basics of programming for video games using the Python programming language. You’ll come away with a customised character and your very own game that you can keep working on after the event!
• Coder Dojo: Build and publish your own HTML5 web site or web app with the CoderDojo coding club. No previous coding experience is necessary. You will work with CoderDojo mentors to design and develop your digital creation. By the end of the day, you will publish your new digital creation to the web where you can share it with your friends and family. After the session, we will keep your creation online, and we will show you how you can download it so you’ll be ready to develop version 2!
• Young Rewired State: Coding is for everyone! Learn how to create cool stuff the ‘hackathon’ way by coming along, learning a thing or two about coding, and working with likeminded people to create awesome things using technology. To participate in this session you will require an intermediate knowledge of coding.
• Arduino: Design and prototype your own physical app using Arduino micro controllers. This is a fast paced, hands on workshop where you can use your own ideas and experiment with electronics and code.
• Mozilla Popcorn: YouTube’s all well and good, but what if you could add extra stuff to your videos? What if you could pull in things from around the Web – LIVE and in real-time? In this workshop Mozilla (the people behind the Firefox web browser) will be demoing Popcorn, a brand new video editing tool. You’ll learn to remix videos in ways you never thought possible! From campaign videos to just messing around and having a laugh, Popcorn’s a free and open tool you can use for just about anything! (EDINBURGH ONLY EVENT)
• Digital Storytelling Techniques with STV: Are you a budding journalist? Come along and take part in this session hosted by STV to find out more about the digital story-telling techniques they use to deliver the news. Timelines, maps, streams and info-graphics are used every day to help inform viewers, in this session you will use these tools to tell your story. (EDINBURGH ONLY EVENT)
• Stop-Frame Animation with BBC: Why not try stop-frame animation and bring your story to life with BBC Scotland L.A.B. In groups we will story board, make models, animate, add sound effects and music to create a short film by the end of the day. All you have to do is … be prepared to work as part of a team, be creative and have fun! The session is ideal if you have never done any animation before. (GLASGOW AND ABERDEEN ONLY EVENT)

Go along! Book with eventbrite.

A Walk in Kilmarnock

It’s no exactly Burns, but hey, it is his Day, so here’s some doggerel that I made. Feel free to throw away!

Burns

It’s no exactly Burns!

A Walk in Kilmarnock

I kissed her first on Bank Street.
We strayed alang the cobbles.
I mind the freckles on her lip,
I mind my belly wobbles!
I mind my airm aboot her waist,
Her e’en, as we stopped tae talk.
I mind we turned up College Wynd
An’ kissed ablow the nock.

Desire-lines coiled the Strand
Tae the station clock high up,
Then doon John Finnie Street we sang
Like when we’d won the cup!
We turned an swung ower Tim’er Brig
Tae King Street, an the shoaps
I pledged my love would aye rin true
Ti’ the Fen’ick waatter stoaps!

We crept enrapt ablow the moon
That lit oor starry paths
An often by a daurkened door
We stopped tae catch oor breaths.
A nicht o blessed joy we had,
Frae Riccarton tae High Street
An aw the kirks in step tick-tock’d wi’
Oor herts’ harmonic beat.

Kilmaurnock toon was oors that nicht
She was mine, an spun me roond.
I was but a geg on legs,
My spring was ower-woond!
Sae slow, sae fast, aboot the toon,
We turned, wi’ the minute haun’,
Ilk’ brief, sweet second drippin’ doon,
Afore ye ken, it’s gone!

We had naewhere tae go or be
Displaced, an young an free,
But juist hoo brief that daun’er wis
I couldnae then forsee.
As shair’s the Palace clock sees aa
The fulness o the airts,
Sae monie faces has a lass
Tae vex a lad o’ pairts.

For sixteen year’ is still a wean
An lassies they are fickle.
My dear ye dealt a bonnie slap,
(Tho’ no sae much the tickle!)
We split, we pairted, me bereft -
She said she had anither!
(Ae nicht I spied them by the brig.
I sweir, I grat a river).

Her hair, her een, her frecklet face,
For several cauld moons sired
Waukrife, fey, grief-stricken dreams,
That mony strolls inspired.
Alang familiar weys, yet strange,
I fun’ masel, loast
An the chidin’, happy, laughin’ nocks
Exacted heavy coast.

I trailed alang thae bonnie wynds,
Again, an ower again.
An even prayed an raged at God!
For refuge fae the rain.
Losin’ hours, days an weeks,
Autumn, winter, year -
My blood, fremit as the river,
As torturous (an clear!)

An’ sae we grow, an’ sae we learn
An doole, gie up the ghost.
An’ sae we settle, sae we’re bate,
Yet love oor torments most!
Kisses, they are o’ their time -
An’ glorious time we spent! -
But’s no her lips I dream o’ noo,
It’s whit they represent.

Ma aul’ hert cannae beat sae fast
As that time in the toon,
But memories o’ ma braw, loast lass
Yet follae me aroon’.
I daun’er by the Laigh Kirk,
See lads tak’ that same walk -
An’ nae folk hear what I can hear,
The ticking o’ yon nock.

Was it a noose, that ramblin’ time,
A shackle I m’un bre’k,
Frae Gran’ Hall tae College Wynd,
Lassoo’d aboot ma neck?
Micht I hae held the Moment
As licht’s I grasped her waist
An’ no dreamed sully, love-lorn schemes
She carelessly erased?

For aye an true’s but youth’s desire.
- We burn tae be defined!
In time there comes a lettin’-go:
A wisdom we unwind.
Could I hae cheatet he’rtbrek
An hushed thae flytin’ nocks,
By lettin things be as they’ll be,
An takin’ ither walks?

Come Spring, a flash-flood hit the watter -
A fella escaped wi’s life.
He’ll mebbe never be the same,
Aye watchin’, worry-rife.
Experience’s a hard maister,
An the lang shadda cast
Can rob ye o’ the joys o’er-dear
…If ye let it last.

Kindle Fire HD – No FreeTime Parental Control in UK (yet)!

I am very disappointed that the FreeTime is not available in Scotland or the rest of the UK. Just bought a Kindle Fire HD for my son’s Christmas and I have to leave it without adequate parental controls. Yet I’ve seen complaints on Amazons forums that it is advertised as having this in the UK.
Can’t Amazon just post a release date? Will it be available by Christmas?
I have to say also that they could do with a simple setup guide if you’re a parent buying for a child. For example…

Do I register the device to me, then add an account for the kid (and how do you do this)?

Also the credit card requirement is all wrong if I want to let my kid download free apps.

Apart from these frustrating downers it does seem to be a great little device! At least its not as confusing as the whole XBox sign up shenanigans of last year!! Now don’t get me started on that.

Shallow thoughts….

There is no depth in anyone’s life. No recognition in their eyes. Through pleasure and personal tragedy they swing from distraction to inebriation to sport. The arts have become entertainment alone, and the best and cleverest productions offer no succour to the seeker of meaning that stands in the unceasing rain of the human condition.
